One of the propeller blades penetrated the cabin while the aircraft was over the town of Flat Rock, Wayne County, Michigan, USA on a flight from Chicago to Toronto with fatal results to one passenger.

Both of these had electrically heated elements to prevent a buildup of ice from forming.

Note the erosion of the covering on the metal petals on the leading edge of the blades.

The Prop Spinner was not heated.

A lot of pilots preferred black painted Cowlings as this allowed them to easily see any ice buildup.

The fuselage skin in line with the Propellers was strengthened to prevent damage from lumps of ice that was often flung off at a high velocity if the anti-icing system was switched on late.
