It first flew on Friday, 4 March 1960 at Weybridge, Surrey, England powered by Rolls-Royce Dart 525 engines.


During its life this aircraft was also owned and/or operated by
Austrian Air Transport, Shackleton Aviation Ltd, Transportes Aereas del Cesar Ltda (TAC), Lineas Aereas la Urraca (LAU), and Aerovias del Cesar (Aerocesar Colombia)

Its fate:-
Withdrawn from service by Transportes Aereas del Cesar Ltda (TAC) and stored at El Dorado International Airport, Bogotá, Colombia in January 1980.

Title transferred to Aerovias del Cesar (Aerocesar Colombia) due to a corporate name change but the aircraft remained stored at Eldorado, Bogotá, Colombia in TAC livery.

Offered for sale but it remained stored. No further sightings so presumed as scrapped.

Originally laid down for ANSETT-ANA Airlines as a Type 832 but the sale was not completed.

Re-designated as a generic Type 810U by Vickers pending a sale.

Converted during final construction to V.837 standard for Austrian Airlines (AUA).

4 March 1960
First flight from Brooklands Airfield, Weybridge, Surrey, England as a Type 837. Some reports quote 3 March 1960.

It landed at Wisley Airfield, Surrey, England for fitting out and test flying.

10 March 1960
Noted at Gatwick Airport, Surrey, England carrying out a single ILS approach and overshoot.

12 March 1960
Noted at Blackbushe Airport, Hampshire, England carrying out multiple ILS approaches and overshoots.

21 March 1960
Departed from Wisley Airfield, Surrey, England to London Airport (Heathrow), Middlesex, England during the delivery to Austrian Airlines (AUA).

It was fitted with integral front 'airsteps' and extended range 'slipper' fuel tanks.

Named as 'Johann Strauss' after arrival in Austria.

The name was painted on the forward cabin door.

The name was repositioned on the lower forward fuselage after the introduction of a revised livery.

Leased to Austrian Air Transport.
