They were diverted there because Rongotai Airport, Wellington was closed by bad weather.

Note that the seat base at least is not an original as it has a cutout in it to allow for a floor mounted control column to be pulled back by the pilot. The Viscount had a horizontal control rod system which was pulled out from the panel or pushed forwards.

Note that the number 4 (starboard outer) propeller is in the feathered position compared to the ground fine pitch position on the number 3 engine.

The Viscount was unaffected by the disastrous earthquake that devastated the city of Christchurch, New Zealand at 1 PM local time 22 February 2011 with sadly a great number of fatalities.

This photo of the distorted railway tracks in the area of the museum graphically illustrates what 6.2 on the richter scale can achieve.

It took a long time to get the insurance situation resolved.

The aircraft is covered in dust as a result of the delays and all the subsequent repair work.
