This shows the old perspex cover that is broken and clouded over due to the effects of ultra-violet light from the sun.

The new one originated from a spares package that was shipped aboard South African Air Force Viscount 150 (C/N 280) on her delivery flight in 1958 but never used.

There were two of these in the consignment of spares that had recently been donated by Lucas Chambers of Avocet UK Ltd.

Here is one of the perspex covers fitted to the starboard wing.

The green indicator gives a visual confirmation to anyone viewing from the cabin window that the starboard main landing gear is down and in the safe position.

As you can see from the previous photo the cover was originally held in place by a series of screws but on this aircraft it is held by a quick release flap, which was probably a local TCA modification.

These are hydraulic pipes and fittings that form part of the nose leg steering system. Unfortunately there wasn't a hydraulic ram to match the one seen in the foreground.

They will probably make one out of wood, which when painted silver will look like the real thing.

Here the No.4 (starboard outer) engine cowlings get a good buffing which is very hard work and also very messy.

The end result is well worth the effort, especially now that the aircraft is not exposed to the harsh Canadian winters.

August 2010

Purchased from the British Columbia Institute of Technology and restored to its Trans-Canada Air Lines (TCA) 'White Top' livery with fleet number 625.

During Brian R Burrage's visit to see CF-THG at the BCAM, Victoria International Airport, North Saanich, British Columbia, Canada 12 August 2010 he met a very distinguished member of the museum team who works in the library department.

Norm Stoddard used to work for TCA and was part of the team of specialists who travelled over to Weybridge, Surrey, England in the early fifties to evaluate the TCA Viscount and the various systems.

Norm met George Edwards, Jock Bryce and a young Brian Trubshaw amongst others.

Jock took him for a trip in the Vickers Valiant.

As Norm was an avionics expert he was very impressed with the new systems on board, which were still effectively secret at that time.

Norm remembers that when the TCA aircraft were first delivered there were a lot of problems with the ADF (automated direction finder) navigation system.

He went on a test flight with a representative from Marconi and when they flew over New Jersey State in the USA the ADF needle went crazy as it picked up signals from all the local radio stations.

Needless to say, Marconi soon had a fix in place.

It was a real honour to shake the hand of someone who had met so many notable Viscount people.
